**CSU Instructor Open Textbook Adoption Portrait**

**Abstract: **This open textbook is being utilized in a College Algebra and Trigonometry course for undergraduate students by Olga Gutkina, M.A., at Cal Maritime Academy. The open textbook has a good approach of explaining algebra topics and introducing students to trigonometric functions. The main motivation to adopt an open textbook was the desire to replace the overpriced textbook previously used in this course with an inexpensive alternative. Students are able to download the open textbook on the OpenStax website for use on their computers.

**Description: **

*Algebra and Trigonometry* provides a comprehensive and multi-layered exploration of algebraic principles. The text is suitable for a typical introductory Algebra & Trigonometry course and was developed to be used flexibly. The modular approach and the richness of content ensure that the book meets the needs of a variety of programs.

*Algebra and Trigonometry* guides and supports students with differing levels of preparation and experience with mathematics. Ideas are presented as clearly as possible, and progress to more complex understandings with considerable reinforcement along the way. A wealth of examples — usually several dozen per chapter — offer detailed, conceptual explanations, in order to build in students a strong, cumulative foundation in the material before asking them to apply what they’ve learned.

**Math 100: College Algebra and Trigonometry**

**Description: **Combines the necessary elements of college algebra and trigonometry to prepare students for subsequent study of calculus, computer programming, navigation and the physical sciences. Topic coverage includes linear, quadratic and higher polynomial equations, rational logarithmic and exponential functions and equations, trigonometric functions and their inverses and equations, with graphical representation of all of the above. Other topics are generalized and periodic functional relationships, multivariable systems with matrix algebra including inversion and determinants, complex numbers, vectors and appropriate computational methods, the rapid computation of values in plane triangles and various functions using the pocket calculator.

**Prerequisites: **Two years of high school algebra or MTH 001, or passing score on ELM, or otherwise exempt from remediation.

**GE credit: **4 units

**Learning outcomes:**

*Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:*

- Apply mathematical techniques and reasoning to problems in math, and understand and perform requisite mathematical calculations and symbolic manipulations.
- Create mathematical expressions from a word or application problem and analyze those expressions applying mathematical principles.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of solving problems in math and critically evaluate quantitative information, and identify deceptive or erroneous reasoning.

**Curricular changes:**

Since I started using this textbook in my course, I have been able to utilize the online instructional system available WebAssign. WebAssign enriches College Algebra and Trigonometry with feedback in online versions of the textbooks questions and links to the corresponding section of a complete, interactive eBook. Tutorial questions are available for all major concepts and guide students step by step through the solution of a problem.

Learn by Example questions showcase fully worked-out solutions to the problems available for students to review when needed. Additionally, select questions link to videos of a similar problem being worked out and are ideal for visual learners. Using WebAssign, I am able to assign homework which students complete online. Since I started using this system, I have noticed that students are now more likely to complete their homework and able to practice more during the semester which leads to better grades on quizzes and exams.

**Teaching and learning impacts:**

Collaborate more with other faculty: **Yes**

Use wider range of teaching materials: **Yes**

Student learning improved: **Yes**

Student retention improved: **Yes**

Any unexpected results: **No**

Can you please provide a rationale for why you answered Yes to the four questions above?

**Sample assignment and syllabus: **Please provide a sample assignment that we can include.

Syllabus

This is the syllabus I used for the Fall 2015 class.

**OER Adoption Process**

In the past, we used a textbook for which students had to pay about $175.00. Students often complained about the cost of the textbook, especially since they only used this textbook for one semester. Openstax college website offers a free Algebra and Trigonometry textbook that students can download on their computer and save money.

This textbook perfectly covers the materials that students need to learn in my class, and it prepares them to utilize that knowledge in other classes that they will take in the future. If in the future they will need to review any material learned in my math class, they will be able to easily find it in their downloaded textbooks. Openstax college website also has the WebAssign system which includes online homework that is based on the free Algebra and Trigonometry textbook. The access to the WebAssign online homework costs about $33 which is much cheaper than similar systems on other websites.

**Student access: **

Students are able to download open textbook on the Openstax website and then use this textbook on their computers.

**Student feedback or participation:**

Students have been giving me positive feedback about this open textbook. The textbook covers the material that students need to learn in an Algebra and Trigonometry class. Each section includes examples with solutions which assist students in their learning.

Students appreciate the large variety of example included in each section of the book that we cover in class. Students also like the WebAssign System because of the immediate feedback that they receive and the resources available on the website. They like having the opportunity to view videos that demonstrate how to solve problems and the ability to review solutions to similar problems. How do they react to the fact that it is a free textbook? Do you have any actual comments from students?
