Naming Binary Ionic Compounds - (only 2 kinds of elements)
cation (+) name used? anion     (-) name used?
Type I
metal with non-metal metal, ions can only have one charge value (Gp 1, 2 & 3 elements plus transition elements with only one charge value) name of metal non-metal name of non-metal with -ide suffix
Type II
metal with non-metal metal, ions can have more than one charge value (transition elements) name of metal with Roman numeral of charge non-metal name of non-metal with -ide suffix
Naming 2 ion compounds with polyatomic anions
cation (+) name used? anion     (-) name used?
Type I
metal with non-metal metal, ions can only have one charge value (Gp 1, 2 & 3 elements plus transition elements with only one charge value) name of metal polyatomic  use name of ion
Type II
metal with non-metal metal, ions can have more than one charge value (usually transition elements) name of metal with Roman numeral of charge polyatomic  use name of ion
Type I & II always have a metal for the positive ion (cation)
